Obesity is a serious health concern for children and adolescents. Results from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years are obese. Between 1976-1980 and 1999-2000, the prevalence of obesity increased. Between 1999-2000 and 2007-2008 there was no significant trend in obesity prevalence.Among pre-school age children 2-5 years of age, obesity increased from 5 to 10.4% between 1976 and 1980 and 2007-2008 and from 6.5 to 19.6% among 6-11 year olds.  Among adolescents aged 12-19, obesity increased from 5 to 18.1% during the same period.Obesity is a disease that affects 34 percent of adults age 20 and over in the United States, which amounts to more than 72 million people. About 33.3 percent of American men and about 35.3 percent of American women are obese. This is a huge problem, but what about the causes for this? In most children and adolescents their parents are the biggest role model. When the government wants to come up with a solution to this epidemic they look at the children, but we should be trying to help the adults. Then the children will follow. That is why I created Less Than 3. This is a fast food chain that is just as cheap as McDonalds or Wendy’s or Taco Bell but 100% healthier. This way parents can take their children out to eat and keep them from being unhealthy.
